The Rust Tapestry explores the potential marks and stains made by found rusty metal collected during my travels around the island of Ireland and the streets of Belfast. These collected bits of metal represent points of reference in a continuing journey to discover this island that has become my second home. The recycled cotton cord has been dyed using rust to produce a mottled grey/green affect. The strands are then incorporated into the knotted tapestry pattern using macramé techniques. The alternating accent squares are from undyed recycled cotton strands produced from the fibres of post-consumer waste. The motivation to explore this process comes from a desire to implement more sustainable methods in my work and to utilize everyday discarded objects.
